”Thanks Cate, brilliant to work with you again, you make it such a pleasure. We're delighted with the design work, you did a fantastic job!
BRAID UK
The Brief
Bridging Responsible AI Divides (BRAID UK), commissioned me to create and develop the Tipping Point’ exhibition identity that would translate across digital, print and large format artwork assets.
“Essentially, we would like you to come up with a concept ‘brand’ for the exhibition as a whole which would then filter into the individual interpretation elements for the space plus the general publicity graphics for Inspace/building.
The look and feel should lean into BRAID values (trustworthy, responsible, open-hearted, authentic, professional, community-minded, inclusive, clear, creative etc) but could lean hard into the playful/creative space. Could be done by lifting the tone of the BRAID palette for example.”
An additional sister exhibition to consider. ‘Authenticity Unmasked’ presents three newly commissioned artworks that explore how AI reshapes our understanding of authenticity, truth, and identity.
The venue was explored for display possibilities.
- External Glass window graphics as cut out vinyls
- External Entrance door cut out vinyls
- Title display on large lightbox at entrance
- Introduction and acknowledgement Panels
- Artists Panels for each commissioned display
- Pavement and Window circular vinyls to be used as a way-finding device
About the Exhibition
Tipping Point is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), delivered by BRAID UK in partnership with Inspace at Design Informatics, University of Edinburgh, with support from Edinburgh Art Festival & Better Images of AI. BRAID is co-led by Shannon Vallor and Ewa Luger.
“Tipping Point explores how artists can help us more wisely respond to the present realities and near-future horizons of AI. Featuring seven newly commissioned artworks from across the UK, the exhibition presents new ways of thinking about today’s AI, the futures we want and the communities needed to build it. Artworks, ranging from digital installations to sculptural interventions, zines and comedy sketches, address themes that reimagine AI uptake, inspire activism and resilience, and showcase artistic creativity in the field.”
The Solution
Reflecting the artists work and overall commissioned pieces was a factor in my approach. I was mindful to spark visual curiosity to the audience but not to distract from the work on display. I was drawn to Topography and maps – shapes and wiggly journeys appealed to me and this created a sense of navigation through the cultural yet responsible use of AI.
Advancing technology is often visually represented using the kind of ‘futuristic’ images used in old sci-fi films – Robots, laser beams, etc. I don’t believe this approach is a true reflection and, as with my Brand Identity for The National Robotarium design approach, I look at nature and historical human creativity for inspiration.
